Sheepy Hollow Shetlands
of mid Wisconsin
We are located 25 miles east of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, which is in the middle of the state. Our town is the home of many Norsemen, so they all know where the Shetland Islands are located. These sturdy small ,short tailed sheep have come from Norway orginally, brought to the Shetland Islands by Norwegian settlers, they belong to the Northern European short tail group which contains Finnsheep,Norwegian Spaelsau, Icelandics,Romanovs and others.
Shetlands are easy to care for , being a hardy group of sheep, they retain many of their primitive characteristics ,they have survived for centurys under harsh conditions, on a meager diet. Here in the United States they do quite well under less rigorous conditions, they lamb with ease and are easier to care for than many of the improved breeds.
Shetlands are small sheep rams usually weigh 90 to 125 pounds, the ewes are 75 to 100 pounds, the rams have beautiful sprial horns and the ewes are usually polled, they have a naturally short tail, which they wag when shown attention.
Shetlands are usually registered with the NASSA North American Shetland Sheepbreeders Associaiton, where the pedigree certificates are issued, members also receive a flock book, newsletter, Shetland information handbook. as well as current news and educational articles.
